What is divorce mediation and how can it help with my divorce?

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2016 | Divorce Mediation, Firm News |

A number of issues may be disputed during the divorce process including property division, spousal support, child support and child custody. Though disagreements can grow contentious, many may be worked out through the process of divorce mediation. Couples approaching divorce today may wonder what the divorce mediation process is and how it can help them with their divorce.

Divorce mediation is an alternative that may help divorcing couples save time, money and acrimony during the divorce process. Divorce mediation is an alternative to the traditional divorce process but also works alongside it. The divorce mediation process can help guide couples towards agreements that are best for them and their family. The divorcing couple likely has a better understanding than the court of what is best for their family and the family law process, in general, provides the flexibility for divorcing couples to reach divorce-related agreements that are best for them.

During the mediation process an impartial mediator will help the couple resolve differences and disagreements to reach agreements both parties can live with. This can be valuable for a number of reasons including its ability to minimize the emotional toll a divorce can take on the parties as they struggle to reach agreements concerning serious divorce-related issues. The mediator does not make any decisions for the couple and both parties have to agree to outcomes decided upon during the mediation process.

Divorce mediation is an option for divorcing couples to consider and can be used to resolve some or all of the divorce-related issues the couple has. The effectiveness of divorce mediation largely depends on the couple so it is important that they understand the process, its benefits and how it can help them work towards agreements concerning important divorce-related issues.
